Actor Shane Rangi to Direct Taonga, a Personal Story of Resilience Backed by James Cameron
Celebrated actor and stunt performer Shane Rangi is taking a major step behind the camera with his directorial debut, Taonga, which explores his own life story. Known for roles in Avatar and Thor: Ragnarok, Rangi brings a unique perspective as he portrays a fictionalized version of his journey—from rising as a rugby star to facing homelessness and enduring a harrowing encounter with police. The film is produced by Fandomodo Films and executive-produced by James Cameron, a close collaborator of Rangi’s through the Avatar franchise.

The film’s plot, crafted from Rangi’s personal script, reflects the harsh realities of homelessness and the transformative strength of resilience. Rangi’s journey from stunt roles to directing is emblematic of a broader movement in cinema, where indigenous stories are increasingly central. Rangi aims to present a story that resonates universally while offering a heartfelt portrayal of Māori culture. Principal photography for Taonga is scheduled to begin in New Zealand in 2024 once casting begins, pending the end of the SAG strike.

In addition to Cameron, the executive team includes notable industry figures such as Mikael Borglund and Scott Frank. The film’s commitment to social themes and its deep cultural resonance with the Māori community highlight the evolving landscape of storytelling that speaks to cross-cultural empathy and resilience.
